What Is a Subluxation?
The term subluxation is foundational to chiropractic care, yet it is often misunderstood. In simple terms, a subluxation refers to a change in how a spinal joint moves or functions. This shift can influence how the body experiences movement, posture, and physical tension.
What Causes a Subluxation?
The body is a dynamic system constantly adapting to different types of stress. These stressors can broadly be grouped into three categories:
-
Physical Stress: Falls, injuries, repetitive movements, or lifting.
-
Chemical Stress: Nutrition, hydration, and environmental exposures.
-
Emotional Stress: Work pressure, family challenges, and ongoing mental load.
Over time, these combined inputs influence how the spine functions. For example, if the lower spine loses its alignment, the body may develop a compensation pattern that leads to chronic back pain.
The Spine and the Nervous System
The spine provides the primary structure and protection for the nervous system, which is responsible for receiving information from the body, processing that data, and coordinating responses.
Because of this intimate connection, changes in how the spine moves may influence how the brain experiences and responds to its environment. When a subluxation occurs, it creates “noise” or interference in this communication. This is often why a stiff or restricted neck can eventually contribute to more complex issues like recurring headaches or migraines.
A Vitalistic Perspective on Health
Some approaches to health focus primarily on symptoms – addressing discomfort only where it appears. A vitalistic perspective looks more broadly at how the body functions as a whole. From this viewpoint:
-
The body is constantly adapting.
-
Symptoms are often signals that the body is struggling to recalibrate.
-
Function and movement are the primary considerations for long-term health.
This approach doesn’t replace other forms of care; it offers another layer of understanding how the body works and how to optimize daily performance.
Where Chiropractic Care Fits In
Chiropractic care focuses on assessing spinal motion and how that motion influences overall function. At Peak Chiropractic, our care includes:
-
Specific Spinal Adjustments: To restore motion to “stuck” segments.
-
Movement & Postural Awareness: Helping you understand your body’s habits.
-
Lifestyle Considerations: Supporting the body’s ability to adapt to stress.
This is particularly important during periods of significant change, such as pregnancy, when the body’s center of gravity and structural demands are shifting rapidly.
Why This Matters
When the body is adapting well and moving without interference, it becomes easier to respond to physical demands and maintain consistency with healthy habits. Understanding how your body functions—rather than only focusing on symptoms—provides a proactive perspective on health for the whole family, from babies to adults.
