Balance in the body is often described as something we should achieve and then maintain – a steady, calm state where everything feels aligned and manageable. In reality, balance is not fixed. It is dynamic, responsive, and constantly changing. This dynamic quality is central to true body balance.

Seen this way, balance is not the absence of stress, but the capacity to adapt to it.
Rather than asking, “Am I balanced?” a more useful question becomes, “How well can my body respond to and recover from stressors?”This reframes body balance as adaptability rather than stillness.
Balance, Adaptability, and Daily Function
The idea that balance equals stillness can be misleading.
Consider how your body constantly adjusts: your breathing changes with activity; your heart rate shifts with thought and movement; tiny postural corrections happen without conscious effort. These micro-adjustments are part of maintaining functional body balance throughout the day.
A body that is truly “balanced” is not one that never shifts, but one that can:
- Respond appropriately to physical or emotional challenges
- Adjust fluidly as internal and external conditions change

Resilience, Balance, and the Nervous System
This adaptability is the definition of resilience – how efficiently the body moves between states of activation (stress) and rest (recovery). Resilience is therefore a measurable expression of body balance.
It reflects how well the nervous system processes input and recalibrates output. Research in physiology and neuroscience increasingly points to flexibility, rather than rigidity, as a primary marker of healthy nervous system regulation. Greater flexibility supports more stable and sustainable body balance.

Instead of striving for perfect balance, it is often more supportive to cultivate capacity – the ability to tolerate change without becoming overwhelmed. This perspective normalises stress while still valuing recovery. Capacity is a more realistic foundation for long-term body balance.
