In Chiropractic, Women's Health

The female body is amazing, it is specifically designed to produce another human being! That does mean however, that based on our anatomy, we have specific women’s health challenges.

Your menstrual cycle is a pretty central part to female existence and periods, pregnancy and childbirth are unique female issues. Many of us have experienced pain during menstruation, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and hot flushes (to name but a few) or know someone else who has. For many years we have been seeking solutions to the inconvenience of symptoms associated with menstruation. In a society where men are assumed superior, women are trying to fight back by suppressing their feminine qualities. We try to reduce the symptoms of our femininity with interventions such as contraceptive pills and the increase in chemical laden body products and convenience foods. Interestingly we are seeing an increase in conditions that used to be fairly uncommon; cancer, fertility problems, heart disease, PCOS, diabetes, mental health problems (alarmingly, suicide is a leading cause of death in women under 60 and the number one cause of death in new mothers).

Throughout a woman’s lifespan, her health status often not only matters to her but also to her family. Women access healthcare more often than men, both for themselves and for their family. Many women become pregnant and give birth which is a significant health care event in itself!

“Prevention is better than cure”

When I think about women and their health, I remind myself that we have made a lot of progress in recent years. However, we need to start empowering young women from an early age to look after their own health and wellbeing. They should not simply accept symptoms as ‘normal’ just because their mother’s, aunts, grandmothers, friends are experiencing them too. We need to teach them to listen to what their body is telling them instead of masking over symptoms with pills and surgeries.

There are many factors that can influence our health, and it should not be a one size fits all approach either.

The nervous system controls and coordinates all the different functions of our body. A disruption in the nervous system (subluxation) results in a communication error between your brain and your body, so your cells, organs and glands are then prevented from functioning optimally. The power is being tuned out or turned off. Here at Peak Chiropractic our Chiropractors help to restore normal nerve function, improving brain-body connection allowing our bodies to function normally and naturally. We look at overall health and wellbeing; addressing not only the health of the spine and nervous system but looking at your mom’s pregnancy with you, physical incidents, your nutrition, chemical stressors and mental/emotional stress too.

The result is often a reduction in pain and inflammation as well as prevention of further problems.

Chiropractic care is safe, gentle and effective for all ages. It helps to address the unique health challenges women face and to improve the overall health of women.
