1 year. 52 weeks. 365 and a quarter days. 8765.81 hours. That is how long it takes the Earth to complete a journey around the sun. It feels like these orbits around the Sun are getting shorter every year and that it was only yesterday that we were celebrating the beginning of the year!

To celebrate is to mark or acknowledge, recognize or salute something. Celebration is defined as publicly acknowledging a significant, happy day or event with a social gathering or enjoyable activity. As a species humans celebrate what was and what is, with the idea of looking ahead to what will be.

Thomas EdisonAs the curtains draw closed on the year, it’s important to reflect – to cast our minds back on the year that was. What did it hold for you personally, professionally or as a family? Was it a year you started a family or was it a year you planned a big project or ran your first marathon? Take time out to reflect on your achievements and on your challenges. Give yourself a pat on the back for what you’ve achieved. For your challenges, ask what you could do better next time and also what you learnt from the experience? On his failures, before inventing the light bulb, Thomas Edison famously stated that he had found 10000 ways NOT to make a light bulb. There is no failure, only feedback.

The festive season is a time for giving thanks and spending time with friends and family. During this time be present! Pay attention to those around you, give them your full and undivided attention, it’s the most powerful thing you can give a friend or family member, the gift of time. Even if it’s your least favourite aunt/uncle or cousin who you can’t stand! Don’t create stress. Is it really worth widening divides, creating family feuds and ruining the festive season/Christmas just to prove your point?

drive-safelyAs part of your celebrations, there will definitely be a few festive or year-end functions to attend. If you do eat, drink and get merry at these (by all means have fun, you’ve earned it), don’t drive. Get a designated driver or a friendly Uber driver (a taxi service available on most smartphones). There’s no excuse for putting yourself or others at risk, don’t become another statistic on our countries roads. When drinking, alternate an alcoholic drink with a glass of water.

As you celebrate and partake in the festivities try eat in moderation, give yourself 10 minutes before going back for seconds. If you know you are heading to a party where the food might not necessarily be healthy, grab a healthy bite to eat beforehand. Your waistline and movement regime in the New Year will thank you.

Add some extra time on to your journey to reduce your stress. Stop, take time out to appreciate the scenery there’s no point in getting worked up. Spend some time in nature or meditate to help keep calm and reduce stress.
